The Square of a Binomial

Multiplying a + b by itself gives a formula worth memorizing: (a + b)^2 = a^2 + 2ab + b^2.

I. The square of the sum of two terms is the sum of their squares plus twice their product.

Likewise (a - b)^2 = a^2 - 2ab + b^2.

II. The square of the difference of two terms is the sum of their squares minus twice their product.

These make mental arithmetic easy: 16^2 = (10 + 6)^2 = 100 + 36 + 2 \cdot 10 \cdot 6 = 256, and 49^2 = (50 - 1)^2 = 2500 + 1 - 100 = 2401.

(x - 3)^2

Working backward

Since a^2 + 2ab + b^2 is (a + b)^2, dividing it by a + b gives a + b at once. A trinomial like that, two squares plus or minus twice their product, is a perfect square: x^2 - 10x + 25 = (x - 5)^2.

Quick check

Write y^2 + 8y + 16 as the square of a binomial.

Bigger "terms"

Sometimes a whole group counts as one term. In (a + b) - 3(a + 2b) + 4(a + 3b) the three pieces are called terms, and the expression is a trinomial. So to square x + y + b, treat x + y as one term: [(x + y) + b]^2 = (x + y)^2 + 2b(x + y) + b^2 = x^2 + 2xy + y^2 + 2bx + 2by + b^2.

How to type math

Use ^ for powers (a^2), / for fractions ((a+b)/2), sqrt(x) for square roots, and cbrt(x) for cube roots. You can leave out the multiplication sign: 3ab means 3 \cdot a \cdot b. Mixed numbers like 4 1/2 work too. The preview under each box shows how your answer was read.

Square each, using rule I or II.
